Wenn das englische Orginal schon kein Passiv verwendet, ist es kein
Wunder, dass es im deutschen Text völlig verkorkst klingt. Wie wäre es
stattdessen mit:

Wenn sie nicht definiert ist, sollte man zur Laufzeit nachfragen.
  

»man« sollte, soweit ich mich erinnere, möglichst nicht verwendet werden. Werde es etwas umformulieren.

Wenn sie als -1 definiert ist, wird die Funktionalität nicht
unterstützt.

Warum übersetzt Du Option nicht mit Option, sondern Funktionalität? Eine Option muss nicht unbedingt eine Funktionalität sein (z.B. --quiet)

 Wenn sie als 0 definiert ist existieren die notwendigen
Funktionen und Header, aber man muss zur Laufzeit nachfragen, wie weit
die Funktionalität unterstützt wird. Wenn sie definiert und nicht 0 oder
-1 ist, funktioniert es immer.

Nein. Sie wird unterstützt. Ob sie auch funktioniert, weiß man erst hinterher. ;-)

Dort ist es beschrieben als »max weights for order keyword«
Das würde dann zu meiner Übersetzung passen.
