Asheesh Laroia and Sam Erbs have started a podcast entitled
<q><a href="http://www.debianandstuff.com/";>Debian and Stuff</a></q>.
The first episode,

MediaWiki</a></q>, was recorded at DebConf14 and contains a little bit
of Debian and a lot of stuff discussed between Sam and Asheesh.

Joey Hess <a href="http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/tasksel/tasksel.git/commit/?id=dce99f5f8d84e4c885e6beb4cc1bb5bb1d9ee6d7";>shared</a>
why Debian is likely switching back to GNOME as the default
desktop environment, based on preliminary <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianDesktop/Requalification/Jessie";>results</a> which show GNOME
coming out ahead in the requalification. This change is also supported by accessibility
and to some extent systemd integration.
</p>

<toc-add-entry name="ContributingOther">Contributing to Debian in other ways</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Vincent Sanders blogged about contributions to Debian and how, surprisingly,
they do not always need to be software related. He
<a href="http://vincentsanders.blogspot.de/2014/10/it-is-bad-plan-that-admits-of-no.html";>demonstrated</a> this with a
project to cool Debian down a bit. The project shows how doing some behind the 
scenes work, which may seem small, really makes a major contribution to Debian, 
and occasionally provides that excuse needed to buy more tools. 
</p>

<toc-add-entry name="OPW">The Ada initiative and the Outreach Program For Women</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Matt Zimmerman <a href="http://mdzlog.alcor.net/2014/10/01/join-me-in-supporting-the-ada-initiative/";>shared</a>
an update on the <a href="http://www.adainitiative.org/";>Ada Initiative</a>, a non-profit organisation
which has helped create positive change for women far past its inital goal of 
supporting women working in open source communities. Matt asked for and 
financially matched donations for the Initiative. 
</p>

<p>
Nicolas Dandrimont <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/09/msg00004.html";>posted</a>
a call for projects and participants in the Outreach   
Program for Women. The GNOME Foundation started the Free \& Open Source Software
Outreach Program for Women in 2006; this year, Debian will participate and offer
(pending sponsorship) up to three internships. OPW allows applicants 
to work on any kind of project to increase the number of women in FOSS. Interested parties
are encouraged to apply. More information about Debian's contribution and an overview is available on the 
<a href="https://wiki.debian.org/OutreachProgramForWomen";>Outreach Program for Women</a> wiki page. 
</p>

<toc-add-entry name="whois15">Who is 15?!</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Today in <a href="http://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_452";>world domination news</a>, we wish you a Happy WHOIS! 15 years ago 
Marco d'Itri thought the process of acquiring WHOIS information should be
simpler and should not require hunting through multiple registries. 
He authored a Debian version of <a href="https://github.com/rfc1036/whois";>WHOIS</a> to replace the BSD-derived
version that used to ship with Debian. Marco's version of WHOIS and his 
continued work in the background over the years for a WHOIS that knows which 
server to query for IP addresses and ASNs has a database that is often more up 
to date than the official IANA database. Marco's WHOIS is now the default WHOIS
client on all Linux distributions. 
</p>

<toc-add-entry name="LTS">Squeeze long term support reports</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Raphaël Hertzog <a href="http://raphaelhertzog.com/2014/09/30/my-debian-lts-report-for-september/";>reported</a>
on 11 hours of paid support work on Debian LTS. 23
commits were made to the security tracker consisting of patch reviews, uplinks, 
and changes to <a href="http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/secure-testing/data/dla-needed.txt?view=co";>the
list of packages that require LTS updates</a>.
A fair amount of research goes into the effort  
beyond just reviewing or triage. He detailed some of the efforts taken to ensure 
quality and stay abreast of vulnerabilities. 
</p>

<p>
Freexian's <a href="http://raphaelhertzog.com/2014/10/15/freexians-second-report-about-debian-long-term-support/";>second
report about Debian Long Term Support</a> showed that compared
to last month, we have gained five new sponsors and now provide almost
25% of a full-time position. 39 packages needed updates in Squeeze, which is nine
more than last month. Contributors paid by Freexian handled 11 updates 
last month, which gives an approximate rate of three hours per update with CVE 
triage included. Given that the list of sponsors is
almost exclusively comprised of European companies, readers are 
asked what can be done to convince others to join
the effort.
</p>

<p>
<a href="http://layer-acht.org/thinking/blog/20141001-lts-september-2014/";>Holger
Levsen's September 2014 LTS report</a> relayed work on the Debian Security   
Tracker which he is happy to announce looks good and professional. Eight bugs were
squashed, a backport of dgit was uploaded to wheezy-backports, and uploads to 
squeeze-lts were made for apache2, nss, libplack-perl, icinfa, libstrus1, and
wordpress. 
</p>

<p>
Thorsten Alteholz <a href="http://blog.alteholz.eu/2014/10/my-debian-activities-in-september-2014/";>reported</a>
11 hours in September on Squeeze-LTS, uploading new   
versions of eglibc, curl, php5, and fex. He also collaborated with
Raphaël Hertzog on a new version of python-django. In other areas Thorsten 
uploaded a new version of <a href="https://packages.qa.debian.org/n/net-dns-fingerprint.html";>net-dns-fingerprint</a>
and worked in his role as FTP assistant with 312 packages accepted.
</p>

<toc-add-entry name="initVote">General Resolution: init system coupling</toc-add-entry>

<p>
In February of 2014 the
<a href="https://www.debian.org/devel/tech-ctte";>technical committee</a>
selected <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/02/msg00005.html";>systemd as the default 
init system</a> for Debian. Since that selection there has been a multitude of 
discussions on many mailing lists both for and against the change. Lucas 
Nussbaum <a href="http://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/blog/?p=845";>posted</a> a tentative summary of each of the proposed amendments 
in the <a href="https://www.debian.org/vote/2014/vote_003.en.html";>init system coupling General Resolution vote</a>
that is to occur shortly. 
</p>

<toc-add-entry name="multimediaBits">Bits from the Debian Multimedia Maintainers</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Alessio Treglia posted <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/10/msg00005.html";>bits
from the Debian Multimedia Maintainers</a> regarding
Jessie. They have been very busy with codec updates, from libavcodec (which has
been updated to the latest upstream to provide for HEVC, Opus, Matroska,  and
Apple ProRes) to libeburl128, libltc, libva, and LADI Session Handler for JACK 
applications. Included is the LV2 Toolkit and a LADSPA plugin bundle. New 
multimedia applications include Advene, Ardour3, dvdwizard, flowblade, Groove
Basin, and mpv, among others. As the overall goal is to improve quality, a few packages
were dropped, such as beast, plotmn, phat, and mplayer. The team invites 
interested parties to join them on the

<toc-add-entry name="DebQuiz">Debian Quiz Game, help wanted!</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Lucas Nussbaum revisited the <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2014/10/msg00002.html";>Debian Quiz Game</a> based on the original TCP/IP
drinking game with 23 newly added questions. He asks for a few adopters to 
assist with pushing the process forward. Readers can check the <a href="http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/debian-quiz.git/";>current state</a> of the quiz with 
its posted answers on collab-maint.

<toc-add-entry name="DebUtsav14">Debian DebUtsav'14</toc-add-entry>

<p>
On October 17-18 at the Amrita School of Engineering,
Debian-India held a <q>Debian Festival</q>: DebUtsav'14.
Despite some last-minute political turmoil, the event planners
persevered.

<p>
Pirate Praveen <a href="http://www.j4v4m4n.in/2014/10/23/debutsav-14-at-amrita-a-rewarding-experience/";>wrote</a>
of the excitement and enthusiasm of working with students  
who were already familiar with FOSS and in seeing women participating in FOSS. 
He also shared his insight into how DebUtsav came to be created and how
this event that marries a Mini-DebConf and FOSS conference can move forward
as a brand and serve as a blueprint for other organisations. 
</p>

<p>
Shirish Agarwal <a href="https://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2014/10/23/debutsav-2014-experiences-day-0/";>posted</a>
sharing his experience and timeline of the planning processes that went into the location, hosting
facility, and media aspects of the event.
</p>

<p>
Balasankar C <a href="http://balasankarc.in/tech/celebrating-deepavali-differently-debutsav-14/";>blogged</a>
about the hackfest, the keynote from Krishnakant Mane, and some of the
sessions that took place during the event. The wrap-up comes with a nice
summary: <q>An event full of FOSS, Fun, and Food</q>.

R. Harish Navnit <a href="http://harishnavnit.wordpress.com/2014/10/20/the-debutsav14-experience/";>described</a>
how an email this April about the possibility of a Mini-DebConf in Amritapuri
led to an idea, collaboration across several teams, a guest speaker, and finally an event.
</p>

<p>
As well as the LTS report mentioned above, Raphaël Hertzog's
<a href="http://raphaelhertzog.com/2014/10/02/my-free-software-activities-in-september-2014/";>Free
Software Activities in September 2014</a> included updating
Django 1.7 in experimental and pushing for its inclusion in unstable. He noted that
the pace of development on tracker.debian.org slowed down a bit, with only 30
new commits in the repository to close six bugs. Raphaël has also been
packaging for a new upstream version of Publican, and sponsoring new
uploads of dolibarr, tcpdf, and tryton-server. 
</p>

<p>
Thomas Goirand shared a <a href="http://thomas.goirand.fr/blog/?p=207";>detailed</a> OpenStack report showing his activity for the
month of September 2014. He highlighted the work done in the background for the
packages Icehouse and Juno (in Sid/Experimental, with backports for Wheezy). His overview focuses on the 
daily uploads, fixes, and collaboration with other Debian Developers and teams. 
</p>

Matt Wimmerman <a href="http://mdzlog.alcor.net/2014/10/01/join-me-in-supporting-the-ada-initiative/";>a posté</a>
une mise à jour au sujet de <a href="http://www.adainitiative.org/";>l'initiative Ada</a>,
une organisation à but non lucratif qui a aidé à créer un changement positif
pour les femmes, bien au-delà de son but initial d'aider les femmes travaillant
dans les communautés du logiciel libre. Matt a sollicité des dons pour
l'initiative et il les a doublés.

Nicolas Dandrimont <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/09/msg00004.html";>a
envoyé</a> un appel à projets et à participantes au programme de
sensibilisation pour les femmes (« Outreach Program for Women » â?? OPW).
La fondation GNOME a lancé le programme de sensibilisation des femmes au
logiciel libre en 2006 ; Debian y participera cette année : en
fonction des sponsors, elle proposera jusqu'à trois stages. L'OPW permet aux
candidats de travailler sur tout type de projet pour augmenter le nombre de
femmes dans le logiciel libre. Les personnes intéressées sont invitées à
soumettre leur candidature. Plus d'informations sur la contribution de Debian

<toc-add-entry name="whois15">Qui a 15 ans ?!</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Aujourd'hui dans <a href="http://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_452";>world domination news</a>, nous vous souhaitons un
heureux WHOIS ! Il y a 15 ans, Marco d'Itri a pensé que le processus pour
récupérer les informations de WHOIS pourrait être plus simple et ne devrait pas
nécessiter de courir après des registres divers. Il fut l'auteur d'une version
Debian de <a href="https://github.com/rfc1036/whois";>WHOIS</a> pour remplacer
la version dérivée de BSD qui était livrée avec Debian. La version de WHOIS 
de Marco et le travail qu'il a poursuivi en coulisse toutes ces années pour
un WHOIS qui sache à quel serveur demander les adresses IP et les ASN, et qui
a une base de données souvent plus à jour que les bases de données IANA
officielles. Le WHOIS de Marco est maintenant le client WHOIS par défaut de
toutes les distributions Linux.

<toc-add-entry name="LTS">Compte-rendus sur Squeeze-Long Term Support (LTS)</toc-add-entry>

Raphaël Hertzog <a href="http://raphaelhertzog.com/2014/09/30/my-debian-lts-report-for-september/";>rend compte</a>
des onze heures de travail rémunéré qu'il a effectuées pour Debian LTS. 
23 envois ont été réalisés sur le gestionnaire de sécurité, consistant en la
vérification de correctifs, créations de liens et modifications de la
<a href="http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/secure-testing/data/dla-needed.txt?view=co";>liste
des paquets qui nécessitent des mises à jour dans LTS</a>. Une bonne
partie de la recherche a été consacré simplement à un effort de vérification
et de tri. Il détaille certains des efforts déployés pour assurer la qualité
du travail et se tenir au courant des vulnérabilités.
</p>

<p>
Le <a href="http://raphaelhertzog.com/2014/10/15/freexians-second-report-about-debian-long-term-support/";>second compte-rendu de Freexian
sur la prise en charge à long terme de Debian</a> montre que, comparé au mois
dernier, le projet a 5 nouveaux parrains et peut maintenant fournir quasiment
25 % d'un poste à plein temps. 39 paquets ont besoin de mises à jour dans
Squeeze, ce qui fait neuf de plus que le mois dernier. Les contributeurs payés
par Freexian se sont occupé de 11 mises à jour le mois dernier, ce qui donne
une moyenne de trois heures par mise à jour, y compris le tri des CVE. �tant
donné que la liste des parrains est quasiment exclusivement composée de
sociétés européennes, nous demandons à nos lecteurs ce que l'on peut faire
pour en convaincre d'autres de se joindre à l'effort.

Le <a href="http://layer-acht.org/thinking/blog/20141001-lts-september-2014/";>compte-rendu d'Holger
Levsen de septembre 2014 sur LTS</a> communique son travail sur le Debian
Security Tracker dont il est heureux d'annoncer le bel aspect professionnel.
Huit bogues ont été éliminés, un rétroportage de dgit a été chargé dans
wheezy-backports et des envois dans squeeze-lts ont été faits pour apache2,
nss, libplack-perl, icinfa, libstrus1 et wordpress.

Thorsten Alteholz <a href="http://blog.alteholz.eu/2014/10/my-debian-activities-in-september-2014/";> a rendu compte</a>
des 11 heures qu'il a effectué pour Squeeze-LTS en septembre, avec l'envoi de
mises à jour de sécurité d'eglibc, curl, php5 et fex. Il a aussi collaboré
avec Rahael Hertzog sur une nouvelle de python-django. Dans un autre domaine,
Thorsten a envoyé une nouvelle version de <a href="https://packages.qa.debian.org/n/net-dns-fingerprint.html";>net-dns-fingerprint</a>
et a travaillé dans son rôle d'assistant FTP avec 312 paquets acceptés.

En février 2014, le <a href="https://www.debian.org/devel/tech-ctte";>comité technique</a>
a choisi <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/02/msg00005.html";>systemd comme système
d'initialisation par défaut</a> pour Debian. Depuis ce choix, il y a eu
une multitude de discussions sur les listes de diffusion aussi bien en faveur
que contre ce changement. Lucas Nussbaum <a href="http://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/blog/?p=845";>a posté</a>
un résumé provisoire de chacun des amendements proposés dans le <a
href="https://www.debian.org/vote/2014/vote_003.en.html";>vote de résolution
générale sur un double système d'initialisation</a> qui devrait bientôt se tenir.

Alessio Treglia a envoyé des <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/10/msg00005.html";>Brèves
des responsables de Debian Multimédia</a> à propos de Jessie. Ils ont été
extrêmement occupés par les mises à jour de codecs, de libavcodec (mis à jour
vers la dernière version de l'amont en prévision de HEVC, Opus,
Matroska, et Apple ProRes) à libeburl128, libltc, libva, et au gestionnaire
de session LADI pour les applications JACK. Sont inclus le Toolkit LV2 et un
ensemble de greffon de LADSPA. Parmi les nouvelles applications multimédia on
trouve Advene, Ardour3, dvdwizard, flowblade, Groove Basin, mpv et d'autres
encore. Comme l'objectif général est d'améliorer la qualité, quelques paquets
ont été supprimés comme beast, plotmn, phat et mplayer. L'équipe invite
toutes les parties intéressées à les rejoindre sur la

basé sur le jeu de bar TCP/IP original avec l'ajout de 23 nouvelles questions.
Il a demandé à quelques adeptes d'aider à poursuivre le processus. Nos

Les 17 et 18 octobre, à l'école d'ingénieur d'Amrita,
Debian-India a organisé un <q>Festival Debian</q> : DebUtsav'14.
Malgré quelque agitation politique au dernier moment, les organisateurs de
l'événement ont tenu bon.

Pirate Praveen <a href="http://www.j4v4m4n.in/2014/10/23/debutsav-14-at-amrita-a-rewarding-experience/";>a décrit</a>
l'excitation et l'enthousiasme de travailler avec des étudiants qui étaient
déjà familiers du logiciel libre et de voir des femmes y participer. 
Il a aussi partagé sa vision sur la création de DebUtsav et sur le fait que
l'événement qui associe une mini-debconf et une conférence du logiciel libre
peut faire avancer les choses et servir de modèle pour d'autres organisations.

Shirish Agarwal <a href="https://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2014/10/23/debutsav-2014-experiences-day-0/";>a posté</a>
faisant partager son expérience et le calendrier du processus d'organisation
du choix de la localisation à l'hébergement en passant par les aspects médias
de l'événement.

Balasankar C <a href="http://balasankarc.in/tech/celebrating-deepavali-differently-debutsav-14/";>sur son blogue</a>
raconte la hackfest, la conférence de Krishnakant Mane et certaines des
sessions tenues pendant l'événement. Et comme conclusion un superbe résumé : 
<q>Un événement plein de logiciel libre, de plaisir et de bonne nourriture</q>.

R. Harish Navnit <a href="http://harishnavnit.wordpress.com/2014/10/20/the-debutsav14-experience/";>décrit</a>
comment un courriel en avril sur la possibilité d'une Mini-DebConf à
Amritapuri à débouché sur une idée, la collaboration entre plusieurs équipes,
un orateur invité et finalement un événement.

En plus du compte-rendu sur LTS, les <a href="http://raphaelhertzog.com/2014/10/02/my-free-software-activities-in-september-2014/";>nouvelles du mois de septembre</a>
des activités sur les logiciels libres de Raphaël Hertzog, inclut l'arrivée de
Django 1.7 dans experimental et un effort pour son inclusion dans unstable. Il
remarque que le rythme de développement de tracker.debian.org a un peu ralenti
avec seulement 30 nouveaux envois dans le dépôt pour 6 bogues complètement
fermés. Raphael a aussi préparé les paquets d'une nouvelle version amont de
Publican et parrainé des mises à jour de dolibarr, tcpdf et tryton-server.

<p>
Thomas Goirand communique un <a href="http://thomas.goirand.fr/blog/?p=207";>compte-rendu détaillé</a>
sur OpenStack exposant son activité pour le mois de septembre 2014. Il met
l'accent sur le travail mené en arrière-plan pour le paquet dans Sid, Juno et
dans les rétroportages pour Wheezy. Sa présentation met l'accent sur les
envois quotidiens, les corrections et la collaboration avec d'autres équipes
et d'autres développeurs Debian.
