This makes it sound as if CIFS was designed with interoperability
(and Mac OS X!) in mind.  Not to mention implying that MS Windows is
the main kind of Unix system...

Oh, and it repeats "for [...] Unix systems".  Replace the first one
with an expansion of CIFS (adding a mention of SMB).

   Microsoft's "Common Internet File System" provides support for
   file sharing over the SMB protocol, and can give cross-platform
   access to network shares from Windows and Unix-like systems
   (including Mac OS X and Linux).

or maybe shift the "cross-platform" part to the next paragraph.

The cifs.upcall utility is for something trickier.  Er... steal a
phrase from the README:

   This package provides utilities for managing mounts of CIFS network
   file systems.

Or maybe (from the top):

   This package contains utilities for managing mounts of CIFS file
   systems, giving cross-platform access to Windows-style network shares
   from Mac OS X and other Unix systems.
