In English it's either e.g. or full words. But they can at least be
short words - you can replace
FOOs (e.g. BAR or BAZ)
with the phrase that's normally considered its standard translation:
FOOs (such as BAR or BAZ)
or less formally:
FOOs, like BAR or BAZ,
Meanwhile
FOO (i.e. BAR or BAZ)
translates as
FOO (that is, BAR or BAZ)
or perhaps something like
FOO (meaning BAR or BAZ)
