Re: processor architecture, package conflicts

For the sake of compatibility with older hardware, Knoppix is mostly
32-bit, but offers the option of running a 64-bit kernel. As I
understand it, a 64-bit kernel and processor are capable of running
32-bit applications and that some packages only have 32-bit builds,
but my only attempt to date to work with the 64-bit kernel only got as
far as seemingly successfully booting the DVD with the 64-bit kernel
only for things to have reverted to the 32-bit kernel after a hard
drive install, so I never got to the point of trying to figure out how
to swap out pre-installed packages for their 64-bit versions where
available or how to avoid incompatibilities between 64 and 32-bit code
on a mixed system.
