choosing memtest from 8.1 on USB stick triggers reboot

I burned 8.1 DVD iso to DVD-R, then booted it on an 8 year old Intel Dell and
ran flash-knoppix to put it on an 8GB stick. I rebooted the DVD and was able to
run memtest (5.01), and same rebooting to the stick.

I put the stick in a brand new Kaby Lake Intel PC with no OM drive, booted to
the Knoppix menu, typed in memtest, and it reboots instead of starting memtest,
whether BIOS is set to legacy or to UEFI. Without doing anything at the Knoppix
menu it boots to the Knoppix LXDE desktop.
