obstinate Intel Q45/ICH10/4 Series, E8400 CPU

I don't remember having this kind of trouble with relatively modern or
post-Pentium II older Intel hardware, mostly Dell Optiplex models including
GX150, GX240, GX260, GX270, GX280, GX620, GX760, all of which either included
PS/2 ports on the motherboard, or had OEM accessory cards with PS/2 ports,
that I always used for keyboard.

Now with a new "refurb" GX780, without an accessory card PS/2 port and PS/2
keyboard, these are the foibles noticed so far (using Dell USB US KB1421 104
keyboard):

5.3.1 DVD:

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix 2 vga=791 fb1024x768
It acts like booted to single mode. Video is OK in desired lines and columns,
but Alt-Fn and Ctrl-Alt-Fn produce nothing but capital ASCII characters or no
response at all, no switch to other vtty as expected. Switching keyboard to
HP model 5308 P/N 5185-2027 produces expected access to vtty[2-4].

6.7.1 CD:

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix 2 vga=791 video=1024x768@60 lang=us
It acts like booted to single mode. Video is OK in desired lines and columns,
but Alt-Fn and Ctrl-Alt-Fn produce nothing but capital ASCII characters or no
response at all, no switch to other vtty as expected.

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix 3 screen=1024x768 depth=8 fb1024x768
It acts like booted to single mode. Video has more than desired lines and
columns, too small text, running in EDID preferred mode. Alt-Fn and
Ctrl-Alt-Fn produce nothing but capital ASCII characters or no response at
all, no switch to other vtty as expected.

7.0.4 DVD:

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix64 2 vga=791 video=1024x768@60 screen=1024x768 fb1024x768
It acts like booted to single mode. Video is OK in desired lines and columns,
but Alt-Fn and Ctrl-Alt-Fn produce nothing but capital ASCII characters or no
response at all, no switch to other vtty as expected.

7.2 CD:

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix 2 vga=791 video=1024x768@60
It acts like booted to single mode. Video is OK in desired lines and columns,
but Alt-Fn and Ctrl-Alt-Fn produce nothing but capital ASCII characters or no
response at all, no switch to other vtty as expected.

7.4.2 DVD:

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix64 2 vga=791 video=1024x768@60 fb1024x768 screen=1024x768 depth=16
(using HP USB keyboard) Produces no screen text following initrd loading
message, nothing but black.

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix64 2 fb1024x768 screen=1024x768 depth=24
Stays in 80x25 mode on all vttys.

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix 3 nomodeset vga=791 screen=1024x768 depth=16 fb1024x768
Produces no screen text following initrd loading message, nothing but black.

with the following typed at boot: prompt:
knoppix64 2
Stays in 80x25 mode on all vttys.

Is black screening a known problem with Q45 video? Is there some way to
escape only the 80x25 and black screen only choices on the vttys in 7.4.2?
