Re: find /boot/grub/stage1 hangs

Hi Felix,
Did you try grub4dos (instead of grub legacy or grub 2) ?
http://code.google.com/p/grub4dos-chenall/downloads/list
Klaus finally did add it to the latest Knoppix 7 versions.
It is much easier to install in the disk MBR (run bootlace from either dos or linux):
"./bootlace.com --time-out=0 /dev/sda" (if sda is your boot disk)
and very easy to configure since you can edit at boot time the configuration.
It can boot multiple OS (including Windows, Linux and BSD) and the main file
"grldr" (no more stage1 or stage2) can be located on the root of multiple partitions
(including ext2/3/4, fat16/32, or ntfs). Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Gilles

FYI: sample menu.lst (grub config file):

title Windows 7
        root (hd0,0)/
         chainloader /bootmgr

title find & load NTLDR of Windows NT/2K/XP
        find --set-root /ntldr
         chainloader /ntldr
        boot

title ipxe (http://www.ipxe.org )
        kernel /ipxe.krn
        boot

title Knoppix
        kernel /linux bootfrom=/dev/sda2/[bB][oO][oO][tT]/k705/*.iso cloop.cloop_max=16 myconf=scan cloop=vmt1031769,3dd lang=us ramdisk_size=100000 apm=power-off nomce vga=791 quiet hostname=auto-clock vt.default_utf8=0 loglevel=1 tz=America/Los_Angeles noprompt data="" user=knoppix libata.force=noncq hpsa.hpsa_allow_any=1
        initrd /minirt_705.gz
        boot

Using 32 bit 6.7 CD to try to repair a 64 bit openSUSE 12.2 Grub Legacy boot failure following WinXP installation. I deleted the symlink /boot and mounted the /boot partition sda3 in its place, which presents a /boot/grub/device.map containing only '(hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/blahblah', plus the expected Grub files. The Intel Sandy Bridge system has only one HD and no floppy controller.

I've run into this before without finding a solution that is not HD invasive, and asked about it on the help-grub mailing list @ http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-grub/2013-04/msg00021.html and on the dfsee mailing list @ http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/dfsee-support/message/14644

Partition info: http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Dfsee/daverL03.txt

Backing up /boot content, reformatting sda3, then restoring didn't solve the issue here.

Any ideas how to figure this out very welcome.
