Grub 0.97 bad in 7.0.4 EN DVD?

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=Z75

Rather new BTX system with Intel 7 Series/C210 Series chipset using Legacy BIOS setting with either IDE or AHCI set in BIOS producing same failure. Fdisk -l reports the WD3200AZDX 320GB HD has 512/4096 configuration with 4096 optimal block size. I partitioned using 64 head 32 sector alignment prior to booting 7.0.4.

After booting 7.0.4 I first did:

	rm /boot
	mkdir /boot
	mount -t ext3 /dev/sda3 /boot

then copied the usual grub files to /boot/grub and made a device map file using by-id instead of sda for (hd0).

Grub from shell prompt gives a grub> prompt, but executing 'find /boot/grub/stage1' locks up the command, with no problem evident in dmesg that I can see. Doing kill -9 on grub PID then trying grub again

	grub> root (hd0,2)
	grub> setup (hd0,2)

seemed to proceed normally, but results in boot failure message from BIOS trying to start from HD. sda3 is set active, and Windows MBR code is still in place.

I may not have anything else around new enough, assuming 7.0.4 is, to support the hardware. Anyone have any suggestions?
