tty video
Knoppix AFAICT is the only Debian distro, dating back to long before KMS
evolved, that produces legible virtual console text the same way apparently
as the most popular rpm distros, like e.g. Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva &
Mageia, and like Gentoo. When I last installed a pure Debian, (6.05), it used
a spindly ugly barely visible font, like most of my experiences with Ubuntu
tty fonts. What is it that makes Knoppix un-Debian-like in by default
displaying nice "bold" legible fonts on the ttys the way rpm distros do,
obeying framebuffer vga= options (e.g. vga=791) when KMS is disabled, and its
video= options (e.g. video=1024x768@60) when it's not?
