KDE startup bug under Knoppix 4.0.2 remastering

Klaus, Fabian,

I am out of ideas with a particular buglet I have in my Quantian 0.7.9.2
(which is based on last fall's Knoppix 4.0.2 cdrom version). Upon startup
and KDE setup, the KDE Crash Handler comes up and tells me that KDesktop
crashed with SIGSEGV [1]. The backtrace is not particular helpful for lack
of debugging, the last symbol is from pthread_mutex_unlock. At that point,
the desktop is obviously corrupted, icons are missing, colors are off, ...

Now, if I then start a konsole and simply call 'kdesktop' manually, all is
well, the desktop configures and a normal session resumes. So this isn't
critical, but somewhat tedious...

Moreover, it doesn't happen under all kernel / boot loader combinations. Eg
with vmplayer and 2.6.12 (from Knoppix 4.0.2) this does not happen whereas
vmplayer and 2.4.26.openMosix cause. From the burned iso it happens with
both 2.6 and 2.4.

I tried upgrading to newer versions of the libraries, but without success.
As this looks to be a simple race condition, can you suggest a place where I
may stick in a short 'sleep 1' or 'sleep 2', and/or a manual kdestop towards
the end of the Knoppix / KDE setup process?

Thanks, Dirk

reached the list, at least. The screen shot is also at
