Just to update the list.  If this happens to you, you can apt-get xserver-xfree86, and evreything will go back to normal.  Just remember to pick the correct xserver when debconf gives you the choice.

I think that this is, amongst other bug-reports that imply that xorg is
not as stable as xfree86 yet, another strong argument to stay with
xfree86 for Knoppix for the moment.
