[debian-knoppix] H E L P ! ! ! !

I am going crazy with this thing!!!! Last night I decided to try to copy
the KNOPPIX CD to run off the HARD DRIVE. After wrestling with MANDRAKE
8.2.....It had all kinds of trouble like not installing a lot of the
things I check off to install....Anyway I followed the instructions to
boot from cd....then when KNOPPIX was fully booted, bring up consol and
type the command to install to HD.....it was a little confusing when it
got to the screen that showed the 3 partitions....so I just selected
"write" at the bottom of screen for all 3. Everything seemed to be going
OK....then it came to a screen to select the FILE SYSTEM....there were 4
choices, none of which I knew what to pick! So I just picked the first
one....everything seemed to be going OK till I re booted.....the OS
finally cameup with a LOGON screen....there were 2 choices to logon as
either KNOPPIX USER or ROOT.....I had already set my passwords for ROOT
and for KNOPPIX USER.....But I CAN"T LOG ON TO EITHER CHOICES!!!! I read
that the LOGON is LOCKED???? WHATS that all about????? Why is this so
difficult? I am not familiar at all with linux, unix or any other linus
flavor. I am slowly figuring out that Linux needs 3 partitions....but
after years of working with DOS I find this scheme very confusing. Is
there some kind of procedure to let me log in? I realize all computers
are different and some people have trouble with different things like
configuring sound, video etc.....I didn't seem to have any problem with
that. The KNOPPIX CD runs fine but is too limited to use as far as
saving anything. I really LIKE KNOPPIX and want to use it if Icould only
LOG ON!!!!!! Please help anyone if you can....I don't want to fall back
as a Microsoft prisoner.....Some of the responses and explanations in
the forum are too confusing....I don't understand a lot of it, but If I
could get the system up and running I could start to learn it. bob
