Don't take it personally, but you just don't have the hang of Linux, Debian,
Unix and all the rest of it.

For _any_ given ext2 partition on _any_ flavour of Linux, the upgrade path
to ext3 is _always_ the same.  Hint: it has to do with a '-j' argument to
tune2fs. The rest is left as argument to the reader.

PS Boot from another partition, or from Knoppix. Make sure the partition in
question is not mounted. Call tune2fs -j on it. e.g.  'tune2fs -j /dev/hda4'.
Add the ext3 to the /etc/fstab responsible for mounting that partition.
You're done, go and have an ice cream.
