Now I respond:

/hda, first physical hard drive (Western Digital 2.1 GB)

FAT32 (Windows 98SE, single partition)

/hdb, second physical hard drive (Maxtor 80 GB)

/hdb1 FAT32X (Windows XP)
/hdb2 linux swap
/hdb3 EXT3 (Knoppix expanded to full Debian)
/hdb4 EXT3 (PCLinuxOS expanded to Mandrake)
# plus free space not partitioned

This is from dmesg:

When I first found Linux couldn't read the first physical drive,
I thought it might have been because that drive was partitioned
by Partition Magic in the past, so I re-formatted it using Win98
about two weeks ago. That didn't change anything.
