[debian-knoppix] PANIC How do I recover

I had tune2fs -j my partition to use ext3 instead of ext2, but it would
always boot up with a warning about ext3 being mounted as ext2. Proc/mounts
confirmed this and no journal is running. I was told I must initrd to get
ext3 to work.

Found an ext3 -> mkinitrd procedure in the "debian reference"!

Tried it: created the initrd, ran lilo. No change. Put an initrd command in
the lilo.conf.

Smoked.
(It finds the "cram", flags 0 block-size and panic!)
====

There are instructions in
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-knopx.html for system
recovery booting from a knoppix CD. Tried that.

su
passwd
chroot

Permissions are not granted to chroot (easy enough to mount the partition
write enabled and edit it but ...)
Lilo will not work because the file system is read-only.

Knoppix will run a lilo from the KDE but this does not have any effect and
its message--something like "lilo might work but ..." dissappears with the
closing of the window before I can read it!

Tried a grub seqence from the debian reference.
find /vmlinuz
root to this result
It finds the root as ext2fs
Attempts to set initrd to ANY of the images I have yield inconsistant file
system (possibly because knoppix has it mounted "correctly" as ext3).
=====

Tried booting a "Dynebolic" CD. This one lets you chroot but has no lilo or
grub.
=====

So ... what can I do now?

(I can always redo the knoppix hd-install which shouldwork with ext3 but
this is starting from scratch. Knoppix CD boot will, presumably let me burn
CDs (main reason I started with it) so I could save certain files, maybe
even the desktop and kmail stuff but I really do not want to start from
scratch.)
