That may be true today... but Knoppix is a perfect example of how we're
moving away from that need. Autodetecting the environment and booting
directly into a graphical desktop is a great first step. When the gui
tools have evolved a little more, there will be little need for most
users to deal with the OS via the command line.

Incidentally, my wife has been happily running a graphical Linux desktop
for over a year. She doesn't know what "CLI" means... and she thinks a
shell is something you find on the beach. This is progress! :)
