[debian-knoppix] Nforce2 / Shuttle / onboard nic problem

I have a rather (to me) strange problem. I'm trying to get the onboard-nforce2-nic
on a Shuttle Mobo (de.shuttle.com/sn41g2.htm) to work.

I downloaded the non-gpl drivers from nvidia, make && make installe'd them,
insmod nvnet (also did an alias eth0 nvnet in /etc/modules.conf).

But: Linux does not detect the NIC.

now, the strange thing is (to me, again), that if I leave the (unused) module
loaded, sooner or later the box freezes (not only X11 I believe).

What am I doing wrong?
