[debian-knoppix] X problems
Using KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-11-19-EN, I have problems getting X
to run on one machine. The Iwill P4ES mobo has an AGP slot,
but I'm using a PCI graphics card, Radeon 7000 or 7500. CPU
is 1.8GHz Pentium 4 processor. RAM is 512MB. The machine
runs Redhat Linux 8.0 very reliably. The same mobo and CPU
with an AGP graphics card work fine.
Anyway, I have to use "2" as a boot argument to get a text
console. From there, if I type "startx", after a while the
monitor says it is not getting a signal and goes into sleep
mode. No amount of ALT-CTRL-BACKSPACE or ALT-CTRL-F1,
etc. will revive the system--requiring a hardware reset.
The latest attempt was to do (at the text console) "XFree86
-configure" followed by "startx -- -xf86config
XF86Config.new" (I might have something incorrectly
capitalized here, but it was right when I did it.) X comes
up, a desktop (KDE presumably) displays a bunch of icons, a
panel, and so forth. The problem here is instead of text
characters, I see boxes.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
