Insofar as getting a clue would you be so kind as to suggest where to start? The syslinux/isolinux docs that I read have explicitly stated that fat is all that may be used with it. He goes so far as to state if you do not wish to use fat then use lilo or another boot loader. This is what caused me to have these concerns. As to the wording of the relevent MS patents I must confess ignorance.
Well, the press release should contain a link to the "license program" for
the FAT patents. And the press release may say many things, but consider the
fact that FAT (pure simple FAT) is nowadays quite old. So old that any
conceivable patents have expired.
What is patented are some tricks that MS introduced in the 90s (Windows95 if I
remember right), and that patents are offered by MS.

Basically, before crying "fire in a crowded place", you should check if there
is fire. And a press release is really not a trustworthy source for that
information.

OTOH, if you consider PRs as trustworthy, I have some news for you ;)

MS: GPL is evil, communistic, antiamerican, etc.
SCO: Linux is illegal, GPL is invalid, etc.

Another thing to consider if debian-knoppix is the right place to cry "fire".
Considering that any infringing code (if there is such) is actually in Linux
kernel.
