[debian-knoppix] how do I get passwords back with login???

I always have to change the password using sudo passwd to use programs like
nessus and I've remastered knoppix and tried to change the passwords but it
doesn't work on version 3.3.
How do I permanently change the passwords to something I want (for both
knoppix and root user)?
While I'm at it, how would I change the default autologin ->knoppix->kde to
the gui login (kdm) and login screen via command line (on "knoppix 2")
and would there be a way to make the default action for logout to logout to
kdm instead of shutdown?

thanks for your time
and I'd appreciate any help
Geoff

P.S. I would also like to suggest getting NTLM authorization
(http://www.geocities.com/rozmanov/ntlm/) and setup script in knoppix so that
it could be demonstrated in enviroments using ms proxy/ISA server and NTLM.
