I cannot think of anything that could be possibly wrong. Usually
forwarding (echo 1> ...) and iptables are used for router/firewalls
only. 

BTW iptables -L just shows the defined rules. You have not defined any. 

To sum it up, you can only ping your external IP, the rest is
unreachable. 

Sorry, I ran out of tricks now. I would try KNOPPIX from CD, fli4l
(routersw on one floppy), bsd*, SuSE or even NT 4.0 to see the response
and/or try another hardware.

Hey I did not expect someone from (nearly) the other side of the world
to even know Aachen. Well, the world is small, as wei used to say in
germany:-))
