We'd recommend the following software.

- maxima
    algebra system
    http://maxima.sourceforge.net/

- geomview
    3D viewing program
    http://www.geomview.org/

- surf
    visualization tool for algebraic geometry
    http://surf.sourceforge.net/

- ptex
    Unfortunately the current stable ptex package looks like broken.
    We could install unstable package.

These software were included in our Japanese KNOPPIX for Math.

FYI
Recently we made new KNOPPIX which included "squeak" (http://www.squeak.org/).

Unfortunately squeak is not total free software.  We have to add a
mention for the license.
