It just uses the frequency that graphics card and monitor prefer, and
the corresponding modelines. You can check this with
ddcxinfo-knoppix -monitor -modes

You will probably havt to boot with knoppix vsync=60.

The problem can be caused by the graphics chip that ALLOWS (and
therefore reports) higher frequencies for attached monitors.

I currently see no way to circumvent this in an automatic way.
