Does it also hang when restarting/rebooting from the Knoppix CD?
There are a few laptops which cause such problems under Linux. The only
one I know for sure is the HP Omnibook 6000. I have found no solution
for this problem so far.
Maybe the APM kernel module needs the realmode-poweroff parameter
(some f*cked-up BIOSes need the cpu in realmode when powering off).
Try adding
realmode_power_off=1
to the line
apm power_off=1
in /etc/modules.
