[debian-knoppix] cannibalizing Win32 registry settings and custom data

Certain information in Win32 registry could be useful
to migrate to linux or configure knoppix on the same box.

Is this useful to the knoppix project?

Network settings, modem settings, appear the most useful
for knoppix. fixed IP, subnet mask, DNS, box name,
dialup numbers, and more.

Email accounts (for sending email only, leave mail on server,
forced bcc yourself on all outbound messages?),
web home page, favorite weblinks,
cookies for site accounts (slashdot, nytimes) would be useful.
But this all requires more thinking.
dial up and email passwords quickly become a thorny issues.

Collecting settings requires:

1) Either batch script to run on the win32 client
before the Knoppix bootCD-OS boots.
Easier for the coders, and takes less space on knoppix CD-R.

2) OR significant improvement to the unix regedit
code so that knoppix could run that. Eventually simpler for the user,
but uses more space.

On win32 "regedit /E C:\knoppix\registrydump20020514.txt"
and several other text based files in the winnt or windows
directory would be all that is needed to collect the info.

On knoppix a script to find the information and use it would be required.

Unix-Regedit is old and requires updates to support win98/Me, NT4, 2k, Xp.
But it could be used to do the same thing without needing to first boot
to windows. The actual registry on Win32 is more current than a
registry text dump saved as file.

If you want to know which registry keys do what, I can post it for win98 and
NT4,
but it would take too much space here and now.
