Bug#689962: linux: Compile with CONFIG_VIRTIO_CONSOLE=y

  ❦ 24 avril 2021 16:15 +02, Salvatore Bonaccorso:

Is this still something we should consider, or can the bug be closed?

I suppose that's since almost nobody chimes in in all these years, there
is no need.

Now that 989153 and 989181 have been merged into this one and the bug is
reopened, then the next question becomes: how to proceed.

The current setting in debian/config/config (ie: globally) is this:
CONFIG_VIRTIO_CONSOLE=m

I can make a MR to change that to =y, but I'm not familiar with VIRTIO_CONSOLE
and thus can't assess whether it's useful on all architectures.

https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux/-/commit/e83e9da65cce7c870acc6b601738dd5d71bdc842
is where the above setting was made ... on 2008-09-04.

The helptext in drivers/char/Kconfig says:
"Virtio console for use with hypervisors."

Unfortunately, I don't know either for other architectures. It is useful at least for AMD64 (to make it work on VM with no ISA bus). For ARM64, I don't know if the platform has a better mechanism for serial consoles.
