Bug#955430: linux-image-amd64: Memory Leak/Memory usage misreported

Package: src:linux
Version: 4.19.98-1
Severity: normal
Subject: linux-image-4.19.0-8-amd64: Memory Misreport/Leak

Dear Maintainer,

after changing my hardware I noticed that the reported "idle" RAM usage — not
counting file cache and buffers — could now increase up to several GiB instead
of the expected RAM usage of 450MiB-570MiB.
This happens when intensively using Firefox (the longer it is actively used
the more the RAM usage increases). This does only happen with some Firefox
Profiles and did never happen with the old hardware.
Even though this might indicate an unrelated problem in Firefox, when a
user-space program is terminated, the leaked memory should be freed up anyway.

However when the RAM is being maxed out, it seems like the missing amount can
actually be reclaimed. Memory usage being misreported is still a problem though
as this way one cannot know how much RAM is actually available.

After consulting the debian-user mailinglist it seems likely to be a bug with
a kernel module.

[1] Has /proc/meminfo and slabtop outputs attached.

   [2] Compares the meminfo outputs
   [3] Addition: Blacklisting kvm_amd,snd_usb_audio and ledtrig_audio
     on boot had no effect.
Without amdgpu or cec X-Server does not start.

Change in hardware:
          | Previously (unaff.) | Current (affected)
——————————+——————————————————————+—————————————————————
CPU | AMD Athlon II X3 450 | AMD Ryzen 7 2700
GPU | AMD Radeon RX580 | AMD Radeon RX 580 <-- Same GPU
Mainboard | AsRock 770 Extreme3 | ASUS X570 TUF-Gaming
RAM | 3×2GB DDR3-1333 | 2×16GB DDR4-2800
Storage | 2 HDDs | 2 HDDs and 1 NVMe SSD

There are no proprietary kernel modules installed, but firmware.
Initially only firmware-amd-graphics was installed, later I also added
firmware-realtek and amd64-microcode. This did not change the memory behaviour.

The issue persists across various kernels and distributions.
Affected are:
  Debian 10 with kernels:
    4.19 (from main)
    5.4.0~bpo.3 5.4.0~bpo.4 (from backports)
5.4.23 with Manjaro patches and config
5.4.26 (vanilla; config based on Debian's config)
5.6-rc7 (vanilla; config based on Debian's config)

  Manjaro with kernel:
    5.4.23-MANJARO

  Ubuntu-18.04 with kernels:
    5.3-ubuntu
    5.4.xy (vanilla)
[5.0 and 4.19 were not tested]

With the old hardware, the following were confirmed to be unaffected:
  Ubuntu-18.04 with kernels
    4.15-ubuntu
    5.0-ubuntu
    5.3-ubuntu
5.4.xy (vanilla; config based on Ubuntu's config)

Debian and Manjaro were not installed on the old hardware.
Ubuntu is no longer installed on the new hardware.

As this seems to be both hardware and Firefox-profile specific this issue is
probably hard to reproduce on a different system.
However if I can provide any more information that might help, I will do my
best to do so.

Kind regards,
Nils
