Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-48squeeze4 Severity: important This is a continuation of archived bug number 596390. The problem has never been solved. I have a workaround that I consider unsatisfactory. With everything set to auto-negotiate, and starting from a powered off system, the NIC has link when the machine is powered up. As soon the 'network' init.d script is started, link goes away. The only way to restore it is to completely power-cycle the system. If I hard-set the speed to 100 and duplex to full with ethtool (which I have been doing in both the pre-up and post-up settings, just to be safe), then I can get link. At that point I also need to hard-set the switchport, or the resulting duplex mismatch causes too many errors. While hard-setting the speed and duplex does make my system functional, it greatly limits the bandwidth between my server and the rest of the computers on my network. When I first encountered the bug, I was running lenny, and had just upgraded the kernel from 2.6.30 (which worked perfectly) to 2.6.32. I am currently running squeeze. On the current install, I have tried upgrading the kernel to the 3.2.0 that's in squeeze-backports, with no change. I had to revert that change - it was causing random lockups. The NIC that's been in use for the last few years is built into the mainboard. Recently I tried adding a PCI express NIC. This is also a realtek nic, and uses the same kernel driver. The add-on NIC has the exact same problem. I have tried many different cables, both pre-manufactured and made myself. I've tried different switchports. Unfortunately, I only own one gigabit switch, a 12-port Cisco 3550. A 32-bit Knoppix CD seems to have the same problem. I don't have the DVD image downloaded yet, so I can't try the 64-bit Knoppix. A 64-bit wheezy netinst image fails to find the firmware, and I didn't have a convenient way of supplying it, so I'll have to try that again later. What other info can I provide? -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-48squeeze4) (dannf@debian.org) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Mon Sep 23 22:14:43 UTC 2013 ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-amd64 root=UUID=5e305485-d930-4059-95a4-95c8e3366674 ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [ 3.991285] loop: module loaded [ 4.071489] md: md1 stopped.
