Package: src:linux Version: 3.2.32-1 Severity: important I was trying to build the toolchain for my linux-based firewall system last night as non-a root user. (I'm fixing bugs I introduced.) I've been doing this on Wheezy for some time without problem. However, that work may have been done on the -1, -2, and -3 kernels; this could be the first time I built on this -4 kernel. Twice, early in the build--somewhere in the binutils/kernel- headers/gcc/glibc/binutils sequence and probably during the second binutils build--I got a GPF. Like the Spanish Inquisition, I wasn't expecting it. The only thing I did differently this time was interrupt the build after each package (via <CTRL/C>) to check the results. Today I checked the build's filesystem (reiserfs); no errors were found. I did not check the other FSen. Smartctl doesn't reveal anything nasty happening on either drive. Any of those packages could have been mis-built and sent something wrong to the kernel. I could have a piece of hardware failing; but I've been developing and building the firewall on this system for 2 years without trouble. And, after fixing a bug, I successfully built the toolchain this morning (using the -3 kernel). After I submit this, I'll try building it again using this (the -4) kernel. Regardless of what I do as a mortal user, I shoudn't get a black screen of death. Attached is a jpg of the screen; I have the 15MP original if I removed too much detail. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 3.2.0-4-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-12) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.2.32-1 ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-amd64 root=UUID=638f3767-4643-491b-957d- 0db178552bcb ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [ 5.800513] [drm] Initialized nouveau 1.0.0 20120316 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 0 [ 5.996079] usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 3 using ohci_hcd [ 6.170521] usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=1453, idProduct=4026 [ 6.170531] usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 [ 6.170538] usb 3-2: Product: USB-Serial Controller [ 6.170544] usb 3-2: Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc.
