Thanks.  When X is running, may I take it that this reliably happens
pretty quickly, and when X is running, the i8k module loaded, and
i8kmon stopped, it doesn't happen at all?

The debugging symbols won't help or hurt, so I'd suggest saving the
space by not installing them. :)
