I stripped out all the nvidia related packages and set up the nouveau
driver. It failed to enable any graphics at all.  No graphical login, no
data :-(  My card is a Quadro 570 and it seems clear that the Nouveau
driver doesn't.

I tried with the other kernel I have installed, 3.2.7 but it failed with
both the nouveau driver and the NVIDIA driver.

Not really a lot of data, but all I can provide at short notice.
