Thanks, and sorry for the slow response.  Your other reply contains
interesting questions, but before starting to investigate I'd be
interested in the following:

 - please send a copy of the kernel messages from bootup, so we
   can see which controller ata10 is (and any other misc info it
   shows during initialization).

 - please test recent v3.x version from sid or experimental and
   let us know the result.  If that fails, we should take this
   upstream, and if it succeeds, we can look for the fix to backport.

   This shouldn't require upgrading any additional packages except
   for linux-base and initramfs-tools.
