... What kernel version do you use? Do you still have to blacklist the radeon module to get as far as you do in booting up?
I've used both 2.6.xx (maybe 39?) and 3.0 and got the same results. Yes, I do have to blacklist radeon, under both kernels. I think this might be a separate issue.
The other problem you mentioned (/sbin/getty not starting) is not yet phrased as a kernel bug, so I'm not sure how to move forward on tracking it down. Is it possible to retrieve logs (like /var/log/kern.log, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/installer) from the system that fails to boot?
OK - I think I can do a rescue mode boot and get into a shell, so I'll see if I can get these files -- and also /etc/inittab. I'll probably have to mount my external drive so I have somewhere to copy them to. I'm going to be a bit busy in the next day or two but I'll do this when I can get to it.
