Thanks for reporting it.  Did sound come in the working version
through the on-board sound card or the tuner?  Does using a mixer
work?  Could you attach dmesg output from the working kernel?

There have been some fixes for the VT1708 driver recently, so if you
get a chance to test v3.1-rc2 or later, that would be very helpful
([1] explains how).
