Bug#435387: Redirect to Kernel?

I just noticed this bug report, and couldn't let be commenting...

I believe "buried in ddp.c" is a little unprecise.

I didn't look myself yet, just repeated what Didier wrote. Sorry for that.

 ddp.c implements the
EtherTalk Link Access Protocol (ELAP). See the header of
net/appletalk/ddp.c:

 * DDP: An implementation of the AppleTalk DDP protocol for
 *              Ethernet 'ELAP'.

Surprise! See head of aarp.c:

/*
* AARP: An implementation of the AppleTalk AARP protocol for
 *                      Ethernet 'ELAP'.
 *
 *              Alan Cox  <Alan.Cox@linux.org>
 *
* This doesn't fit cleanly with the IP arp. Potentially we can use
 * the generic neighbour discovery code to clean this up.
 *
 *      FIXME:
* We ought to handle the retransmits with a single list and a
 * separate fast timer for when it is needed.
 *              Use neighbour discovery code.
 *              Token Ring Support.

Don't know if Alan will do this in this life. :-) But if he will, (not only me) 'd be very glad, Alan!

If you want to run AppleTalk on Token Ring, then you need an
implementation of the TokenTalk Link Access Protocol (TLAP). See e.g.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/internetworking/technology/handbook/ AppleTalk.html#wp1020654

My guess is that you'd have to write that yourself.

Uh. I'm not sure I can do that from my knowledge.

I would be surprised if there was a high demand...

Good point. But Token Ring Card drivers already exist, even if there is likely not a very much bigger demand. :-)
