even with the new 2.6.30 kernel, p54pci is not working in mastermode.

This is not a bug; you cannot and do not need to change the mode of
wlan0.  If you configure hostapd to use its "nl80211" driver it will
create a second interface acting as an AP.  See
<http://wireless.kernel.org/RTFM-AP>.
