We only keep patches/build goo in svn (aka, the debian directory). One
of us generates an orig.tar.gz and posts it, and that's what we
develop against. We don't keep the upstream linux source tree in
source control.
The orig.tar.gz has to be generated to strip out non-free bits. This
stripping mechanism is part of the build system in svn.
