Bug#499115: linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686: installation fails to run Lilo, causing hang on reboot

Package: linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686
Version: 2.6.24-6~etchnhalf.5
Severity: important

After installing the security update for linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 dated Sept. 11, 2008, the system failed to boot the updated kernel. I use Lilo on this particular machine and on reboot, the system froze on the 'Loading Linux...' line.

I had previously updated other systems with the same kernel successfully, so I focused on the differences between those systems and this one. Since Lilo (instead of grub) was an obvious one, I manually ran the 'lilo' command to see if that would fix things. Sure enough, it did.

There's another bug report on this for the amd64 kernel (#496354) but I'm creating another one so that the bug doesn't get relegated to an amd64 quirk. I'm running a P4 2.8GHz CPU.

I know fewer people are using Lilo these days but it used to be the default boot loader for Debian. As such, upgraded systems will be particularly vulnerable to this bug. This system was originally installed with 'woody'.

Thanks.

Regards,
Ed
