I still have to manually add

lp

to /etc/modules for /dev/lp0 to be created, even though the parallel 
port is detected, previously reported for linux-image-2.6.16-2-686 as 
bug #374145.

cupsys nowadays takes care to load the lp module if needed.
not a kernel problem.
