Actually, isn't the real problem that there is no way to tell modules
*not* to take charge of certain devices, by way of some simple
configuration in /etc (short of blacklisting the entire module, or
draconian measures such as removing PCI IDs from the source code)?

Is the kernel community considering such a mechanism? It seems to me
that it would greatly simplify this sort of problem, both to
distribution packagers and end users. It is generally great to have a
choice of drivers for the same device; the development and deployment
of new drivers is simplified because they can be shipped along with
old ones, etc.
