I don't know if its the *best* timing (for the reasons you state), but
it would let us get a 2.6.24-4-based etchnhalf upload done sooner -
which is a good thing, and seems to be one of the driving reasons

fwiw, I was waiting for a 2.6.24-5 to do the above mentioned merge,
but there's obviously no harm in doing it sooner. And I also agree
that we need to upload to stable soon after 2.6.24-5 gets uploaded
(and probably within a day or so of each 2.6.24 sid upload).
