You are the first person to report such a problem and, given there
were no changes that should be in effect that early in the boot
process, I suspect some other local failure.
Please try re-installing this image, after possibly fscking your disk.
If that doesn't work, please try 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13 and see if it works.
If the latest kernel is still not working, please provide the dmesg
output of the last working kernel.
