I tried to completely remove the package (with --purge option) but the
configuration files remain. This problem is found on builds 6 and 7.

I've installed grub 0.97-20 and the problem is solved. Please note the
warnings about the path to 'update-grub' bellow.

I don't have the full path to the 'update-grub' in the configuration
files and the directory '/usr/sbin' is before '/sbin' in the PATH
variable.
