Bug#398360: Default 2.6 kernel image throws a "kernel BUG" when accessing a USB-Harddisk

Let's assume, that reportbug's version output is write above, ok?

Hardware is new, right?

If no, i wish you try test this device in the OS with native drivers from 
vendor, not linux.

If yes. Try new kernel, and preferably from the "unstable".

It's simple: new hardware -- newer kernel version. Kernel in the stable
distribution is updated for security and stability (only).
