MODULES=dep is not yet fully supported.
it includes any module around without any intelligent /sys walking.
that is on my TODO for postetch, also MODULES=dep could/should work
with static /dev.

so yes you are not using the default setting. MODULES=most is the
default and _recomended_ setting for initramfs-tools. I'd be interested
to hear why the size matters for you?

well in that case the initramfs was altered by someone else, you would
also have to pass the takeover arg aka:
update-initramfs -t -u -v
(but no need to send that in, you told me the relevant bit)

no better stay on the standard way of doing things for etch.
you could of course add the firmware to ipw2200.
but atm the course of lesser pain is to use the chosen default!

a blacklist in /etc/modprobe.d and an entry in /etc/modules should
work as blacklist + loading, but i'd consider that ugly.
