Hmm, first, before the kernel upgrade I did the suggested
update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.15-1-686,
and tried to reboot with no success.
Next I did the kernel upgrade to 2.6.16, did not bother to update-initramfs -u, 
 and this one worked fine.
