Bug#362631: linux-image-2.6.16-1: fails to mount root device

Yes, booting that kernel gets me into the rescue shell. All /dev/hda?
partitions that should exist do so, as well.

Here's a list of modules that are loaded:
usbhid
8139too
ide_cd
cdrom
ide_disk
generic
ohci1394
ieee1394
8139cp
mii
ehci_hcd
ohci_hcd
atiixp
ide_core
usbcore
thermal
processor
fan

I am using grub, with an extra partition /dev/hda7 set up as /boot.

/proc/cmdline is
root=/dev/hda8 ro lapic

I did install debian again, once I had upgraded it to unstable, the same bug
happened. I did keep the kernel from testing this time (see original report
for version), which boots without having this problem.

I tried something in the rescue shell: I mounted /dev/hda8 to /root manually
using the following command:
mount -t ext3 /dev/hda8 /root

Then I exited the rescue shell and the system did boot normally.

Regards,
Dominik
