that is the error message of initramfs-tools when no root device came up.
i guess you got into the rescue shell:
did you check if /dev/hda8 existed?
did you check which modules got loaded?

sure modular ide needs the drivers to recognise your root.

please post:
cat /proc/cmdline
what about your reinstall does it boot normaly?
