I have been having very good luck building 2.6.14-2 with all of the
folowing combinations, on sid:

  i386: gcc 4.0.2-3, kernel-package 9.008.4
  powerpc: 4.0.2-2, kernel-package 9.008.4
  hppa: 4.0.2-2, kernel-package 9.008.4

I heard a whisper of some problems with 4.0.2-3, but I have not
seen evidence of that on i386. On the other hand, I've held back
on upgrading the others. I have some vauge memory of a problem with
9.008.3, but I can't put a finger on it.

I'm not quite sure what you are refering to there. But in any case,
give kernel-package 9.008.4 a spin.
